How will RFID connect school, parents and students smartly?

Education holds the power to shape the future and calls for appropriate safety and growth measures in schools. This can be tricky in the presence of a severe disconnect between parents and schools, leaving students to suffer the consequences. It is surprising that even in the 21st century; students lose at least ten minutes per class in the process of marking attendance. Worried parents are unaware of the location of their children. Teachers are bogged down with paperwork and transcribing attendance data by hand. In short, the system is broken.

Is there any way to fix it and create connections between all three and make it convenient to use?

The answer lies in RFID.

Using RFID to connect parents, teachers, and students

RFID or Radio Frequency Identity is an electromagnetic based system that uses radio waves to uniquely identify people, animals or objects. This is achieved through tags which are embedded or affixed to the subjects. Students are given an object with the RIFD chip embedded in it, such as an id card. This card has a distinctive number assigned to each student which can be used to track the child and pinpoint their location.

Schools are increasingly using this system to track their students and notifying the parents in real time such as your child has entered the class or your child has left the school premise. It holds the power to transform the lives of all stakeholders. As the tag is used to track the child all through the school day the connectivity between parents, schools, and children is strengthened.

While there are many ways to use the system the four most common ways that RFID is currently being used are:

  • Automated attendance
  • School bus tracking
  • Cashless cafeterias
  • Tracking library booksElementary school teacher dictating students 2003 Tehran

Anyone who lives in India knows the problems caused by overpopulation. Our classrooms are crowded and our school buses are crowded. Our children could get lost we would have no way, but manually, to ensure the safety of a child. RFID effectively solves this problem; the student is tracked from the minute they get on the bus.

The benefits of RFID integrated schools are manifold, benefitting all parties. This leads to better connections between all three of them:

  1. RFID creates a safe environment for the students
  2. Less attendance-related paperwork for teachers, leaving them with more time for teaching
  3. Peace of mind for parents as they know, in real time, when their child boarded the bus and when they exit the school
  4. Cost-effective operations for schools

The road ahead

Multi-faceted and versatile, the RFID technology is helpful in overseeing the safety of children during their time in and out of school, giving parents and teachers peace of mind. In the future, FID is going to bring schools, parents, and students even closer. This will be achieved by employing it for various activities crucial to school – assigning homework, notices to parents, attendance marking, and fee payments. Clearly, the future of schooling lies in RFID.
